History Data

Calvin Rankin was born into poverty. Fueled by his rage at the world, he found himself hanging out with the wrong crowds. While in a store shoplifting, Calvin came across a young group of students who happened to be the original X-Men. His powers kicked in for the first time and he copied the powers of the nearby mutants. Instead of using these powers for good, Mimic chose another path. Approached by the Brotherhood of Evil, Mimic joined their cause. On his first mission with the team, an attempted kidnapping of Senator Kelly, the X-Men stopped the Brotherhood. Left behind by his teammates, Mimic was captured and jailed.

While he awaited sentencing, Calvin was visited by Professor Charles Xavier and offered a path to redemption. Xavier extended an invitation to join his X-Men. Mimic took the offer. As an X-Man, Mimic became one of the best. The rest of the students were nervous around him at first because of his mimicking powers, but eventually they realized that by sharing their powers he could help them understand themselves better. He eventually became the X-Men's leader and was an instrumental part of a golden age of peace between mutants and humans. Mimic's home reality was a place where mutants became celebrities and used their powers for good.

Taken from his reality, Mimic became unhinged from time. He was joined by his fellow Exiles and told by the Timebroker they were needed to fix the broken chains of reality. If they didn't, their own realities would be changed and their lives destroyed. In Mimic's case, the kidnapping attempt on Senator Kelly went horribly wrong - Kelly and 47 innocent bystanders were killed. Mimic would sit on death row, awaiting execution.

On their first mission, the team looked to Mimic for guidance. As leader of the X-Men, he felt prepared for the role. Unfortunately in that reality Professor Xavier had become a revenge-driven homicidal maniac and Mimic was forced to kill him. Devastated by the event, Mimic realized his emotional attachments to his reality would hinder him in leading this team. He turned the reins over to Blink and acted as her second-in-command.

This constant contact with one another led to a romance between them. Mimic taught Blink about the different worlds and heroes they might encounter - heroes who were never allowed to surface in Blink's Age of Apocalypse. They eventually fell in love and constantly looked to each other for support. As the team went on more missions, Calvin began to become more and more embittered towards his situation. He hated the fact that he was constantly forced to fight people he had only known as heroes in his reality. Mimic eventually took this out on Blink and the two separated.

Unfortunately, this separation came at an inopportune time. Blink was almost killed in battle by a techno-organic virus. Mimic realized he still loved Blink but at the end of the mission the Timebroker sent her away. The Tallus was passed to Mimic. With Blink gone, Mimic resumed his role as leader. The toll on him was immense. Following the completion of a mission against a vampire version of the Avengers, the team was hit by a chaos spell, which sent them all spiraling into different realities. Mimic was sent to an Earth conquered by the Brood. Implanted with Brood eggs on three different occasions, his mutant-healing factor, mimicked from Wolverine, was able to fight off the infection for the most part.

The team was reunited and sent on their next mission. Mimic still had a Brood egg in his system but his healing factor was able to prevent it from taking him over. Unfortunately, in the course of battle with this reality's enraged Thing, Mimic was beaten severely. With his healing factor in overdrive, Mimic was unable to fight off the infection. The Brood egg took control and Mimic fell under the sway of the Brood Queen within him. He fought his team with all of their abilities.

During the conflict, Mimic knocked a building over onto some innocent bystanders. In an effort to save them, Sunfire was crushed by the falling rubble. Mimic continued to fight until an antidote to the Brood infection was given to him. He reverted to normal. Morph found the body of Sunfire and was enraged. He told Mimic that if he knew he was infected and a danger to the team, he should have killed himself. Mimic was devastated by what he had done. At the same moment, as a replacement to the dead Sunfire. Blink was returned to the team.

In the next reality, the Exiles were told they would have to fight their reality-hopping counterparts, Weapon X. Morph was still angry with Mimic for his carelessness and the two walked away from each other. The returned Blink followed Mimic, comforted him and reminded him he had no control while he was under the Brood's influence. In the ensuing battle with the Weapon X team Mimic fought the evil Hyperion. The battle was brutal and Mimic was almost beaten to death before being saved by his teammates. The Exiles survived the conflict and Morph forgave Mimic for what happened to Sunfire, realizing the Brood influence was responsible for his actions.

The team moved on, and Mimic adopted a new mindset. He confided in Blink that he needed to change his ways. He was becoming too brutal and too quick to use violence to solve the team's situations. His mentor Charles Xavier taught him a different way and he was going to start living it. Mimic decided to make a difference in the realities the team traveled to - he swore to never ever take another life. While it may be difficult for him to change his ways with the tasks the Exiles are given, it appears he is trying.

Powers and Abilities

Calvin Rankin of Earth-12, better known as Mimic, is a variant of the mutant whose powers evolved far beyond those of his Earth-616 counterpart. While the original Mimic possessed the ability to temporarily duplicate the powers of individuals nearby, the Earth-12 version eventually developed an advanced form of that mutation which allowed him to permanently absorb and integrate multiple power sets. Over time, this made him one of the most powerful composite mutants in his universe, capable of wielding an extensive array of abilities simultaneously.

Like his counterpart on other worlds, Mimic’s mutation began as a power-duplication ability. His body functioned as a biological receptor capable of copying the genetic and psionic signatures of superhuman abilities from nearby individuals. When he encountered other mutants, his physiology would instinctively analyze their powers and reproduce them within his own cellular structure. However, in the case of the Earth-12 Mimic, this copying process proved far more efficient and long-lasting than normal. Rather than fading once he left the presence of the original source, many of the duplicated powers became permanently integrated into his physiology.

During his time with the interdimensional team known as the Exiles, Mimic gained and retained numerous powers from fellow mutants. Among the most significant were the abilities of Cyclops, whose optic blasts Mimic could reproduce as powerful concussive beams of kinetic energy projected from his eyes. These blasts could shatter barriers, repel enemies with tremendous force, or be used for controlled bursts of propulsion. Unlike Cyclops, who relies on specialized ruby-quartz lenses to control the blasts, Mimic demonstrated a higher degree of voluntary regulation over the power.

He also permanently absorbed the cryokinetic abilities of Iceman, granting him control over cold and ice. Through this power Mimic could freeze atmospheric moisture, generate solid ice structures, and drastically lower ambient temperatures. The ability allowed him to create barriers, encase enemies in ice, or manipulate frozen constructs as weapons. While not always as refined as Iceman’s own mastery, Mimic demonstrated enough control to use cryokinesis both offensively and defensively in combat.

Another major component of his power set came from Jean Grey, whose telekinetic abilities Mimic permanently duplicated. With telekinesis he could move objects, generate invisible force fields, or strike opponents with concentrated waves of psionic force. This ability significantly increased his versatility, allowing him to fight at range, manipulate the environment, or shield himself and his allies from harm.

Mimic also retained the enhanced physical attributes of Beast, including superhuman strength, agility, reflexes, and acrobatic skill. These attributes allowed him to engage enemies in close combat while performing complex aerial maneuvers or rapid movements that would be impossible for an ordinary human. His physical coordination and balance were enhanced to the point that he could execute gymnastic feats even while flying.

From Angel, Mimic permanently retained large feathered wings that allowed sustained flight. These wings provided exceptional aerial mobility and maneuverability, enabling him to travel at high speeds and fight effectively in the air. His wings were also durable enough to withstand significant stress during combat, and they allowed him to carry allies or reposition himself rapidly during battle.

One of the most important powers Mimic gained during his time with the Exiles came from Wolverine. By duplicating Wolverine’s mutation, Mimic acquired an accelerated healing factor capable of rapidly repairing damage to his body. This regenerative ability allowed him to recover from injuries that would normally be fatal, significantly increasing his durability in prolonged battles. In addition to the healing factor, he also gained enhanced senses, allowing him to track opponents, detect subtle environmental changes, and react quickly to threats.

Over time, Mimic’s mutation evolved beyond simple duplication and began functioning as a permanent power-assimilation mechanism. Instead of merely copying abilities temporarily, his body could retain and integrate multiple power sets at once, essentially turning him into a living composite of numerous mutants. This allowed him to combine powers in ways their original owners never could—for example, using telekinesis to guide optic blasts with precision or generating ice structures while maneuvering through the air.

Because of this accumulation of powers, Mimic eventually became one of the most powerful members of the Exiles. His versatility allowed him to fill multiple roles within the team: aerial combatant, ranged energy attacker, telekinetic support, and close-quarters fighter. The combination of superhuman strength, flight, energy projection, cryokinesis, telekinesis, enhanced senses, and regenerative healing gave him an extraordinarily broad tactical toolkit.

Despite these advantages, Mimic’s powers still had limitations. The process of copying abilities required proximity to the original source at least once, and absorbing too many powers could place strain on his physiology and mind. In some cases the influx of multiple genetic and psionic signatures risked overwhelming his nervous system or causing psychological instability. Managing this constantly expanding set of abilities required intense concentration and discipline.

Nevertheless, the Earth-12 Mimic represents one of the most evolved forms of the power-duplication mutation in the multiverse. Where the Earth-616 Calvin Rankin remained dependent on proximity and partial replication, the Earth-12 version transformed his mutation into a permanent accumulation of abilities drawn from many of the most powerful mutants in existence. As a result, he became not merely a reflection of those around him, but a living synthesis of their powers—an individual whose strength lay in the combination of abilities that no single mutant could possess alone.

Weaponry & Paraphernalia

Mimic rarely relies on conventional weapons or specialized equipment during his career as a member of the Exiles. His mutation had evolved to the point that his body itself functioned as a composite arsenal of superhuman abilities permanently copied from several powerful mutants. Because of this, traditional armaments were largely unnecessary. Nevertheless, a number of tools, pieces of paraphernalia, and mission-related technologies were associated with him during his time traveling the multiverse.

The most important piece of equipment connected to Mimic’s activities was the interdimensional mission device carried by members of the Exiles. The team operated under the direction of the mysterious cosmic overseer Timebroker, who assigned them missions to repair damaged timelines across the multiverse. To coordinate these missions, the Exiles relied on a small hovering robot known as Tallus. The Tallus served as a communications interface and navigational guide, informing the team when a reality had been corrected and when they could move on to the next universe. While Mimic himself did not control the device exclusively, he frequently relied on its instructions and data to determine the objectives of the team’s operations. In this sense, the Tallus functioned as the most significant piece of paraphernalia involved in his activities, guiding the Exiles’ movements between worlds.

Mimic also made use of the standard uniforms worn by members of the Exiles. These costumes were designed to endure the harsh conditions of interdimensional travel and the wide range of environments the team encountered across alternate realities. Because Mimic possessed the large feathered wings copied from Angel, his uniform was modified to allow full wing extension while still protecting the rest of his body. The suits were made of durable materials capable of withstanding high-speed flight, energy blasts, and exposure to extreme cold generated by his cryokinetic abilities copied from Iceman. Although the uniform did not enhance his powers directly, it allowed him to operate safely while using his diverse abilities in combat.

During missions across alternate Earths, Mimic occasionally used conventional tools or improvised weapons found within the environments the Exiles encountered. Because the team frequently arrived in unfamiliar realities with limited resources, they sometimes relied on whatever equipment was available locally. Mimic’s adaptability made him particularly effective in these situations. His telekinetic abilities—copied from Jean Grey—allowed him to manipulate objects at a distance, turning ordinary items into improvised projectiles or tools. Combined with his optic blasts derived from Cyclops, he could weaponize the environment itself rather than relying on dedicated armaments.

Another piece of technology occasionally associated with the Exiles during Mimic’s tenure was the interdimensional gateway used to transport the team between realities once a mission was complete. These portals were generated as part of the Tallus system and represented the mechanism through which the team traveled the multiverse. Mimic did not operate these gateways himself, but they were essential to his role within the group. Without them, the Exiles—including Mimic—would have been stranded in whichever reality they were currently attempting to repair.

In essence, while many heroes rely on technology to extend their capabilities, Mimic’s role within the Exiles demonstrated that he himself was the team’s most adaptable weapon. His equipment helped him navigate the multiverse, but the true source of his effectiveness remained the remarkable collection of powers permanently integrated into his own body.
