Historical Data

Henry “Hank” McCoy, known as the Beast, is one of the founding members of the X-Men and one of the most intellectually gifted mutants in the Marvel Universe. Born in Dunfee, Illinois, Hank’s mutation manifested from birth due to genetic alterations caused by his father’s exposure to radiation.

From an early age, Hank exhibited unusually large hands and feet along with remarkable agility and strength, which allowed him to excel in athletics as well as academics.

Expand full history

Hank’s exceptional physical abilities made him a star athlete, particularly in football, but also drew the attention of both Professor Charles Xavier and the criminal El Conquistador. When the Conquistador kidnapped Hank’s parents to force his cooperation, Hank helped the X-Men defeat him and subsequently joined Xavier’s team as one of its original members.

As the Beast, Hank served as both a combatant and the intellectual backbone of the early X-Men. He pursued advanced studies under Xavier, eventually earning a Ph.D. in biochemistry. After leaving the X-Men for a time, Hank accepted a position at the Brand Corporation, where his work in genetic research would permanently alter his life.

While at Brand, Hank developed a serum designed to activate latent mutations. When he ingested it himself, the results were dramatic: his body transformed into a fur-covered, more animalistic form with enhanced physical abilities. This transformation increased his strength, agility, and durability, but also marked a significant emotional and psychological turning point in his life.

Following this mutation, Hank joined the Avengers, becoming one of the few mutants to achieve public acceptance as a superhero during a time of widespread anti-mutant sentiment. He eventually revealed his identity publicly, further distinguishing himself from many of his fellow mutants.

After years with the Avengers, Hank helped reorganize the Defenders into a more structured team, working alongside former X-Men such as Angel and Iceman. However, the team eventually disbanded after a major battle resulted in the apparent deaths of several members.

Hank later reunited with the original X-Men to form X-Factor, a group that publicly posed as mutant hunters while secretly training and protecting mutants. During this period, he was captured by Dr. Carl Maddicks, who temporarily reverted him to his more human appearance. However, subsequent exposure to the mutant Infectia triggered his transformation back into his furred form.

Upon Professor Xavier’s return to Earth, Hank rejoined the X-Men, where he has remained a central figure. In addition to his role as a field operative, he has served as a scientist and educator at the Xavier Institute, contributing to research in genetics, medicine, and mutant biology.

In more recent years, Hank’s actions have become increasingly controversial. His willingness to pursue morally questionable scientific experiments and strategic decisions has placed him at odds with his teammates and allies, leading to a darker evolution of his character. Despite this, his intelligence and dedication to mutantkind continue to make him a pivotal figure in mutant affairs.
