MacDonald Gargan began his career as a private investigator hired by J. Jonah Jameson to uncover how Peter Parker obtained his photographs of Spider-Man. Failing to discover Parker’s secret, Gargan accepted Jameson’s offer to participate in an experimental procedure designed to create a being capable of defeating Spider-Man. The process exposed Gargan to mutagenic treatments that enhanced his physical abilities but had severe side effects on his mental stability.
The experiment granted Gargan superhuman strength, speed, and endurance, but it also drove him increasingly insane. Outfitted with a powerful mechanical tail and armored suit, Gargan adopted the identity of the Scorpion and became one of Spider-Man’s earliest costumed adversaries. Although intended to surpass Spider-Man physically, Gargan’s instability often undermined his effectiveness, leading to repeated defeats.
Expand full history
Over time, Gargan’s mental state deteriorated further, and his criminal activities escalated. He became a frequent member of villainous alliances, including Doctor Octopus’s Sinister Twelve, and engaged in numerous battles against Spider-Man and other heroes. His obsession with Spider-Man and his resentment toward Jameson, whom he blamed for his condition, became defining aspects of his character.
During the period known as the Civil War, Gargan was recruited into the Thunderbolts program, where he operated under government supervision. He was later selected by Norman Osborn to join the Dark Avengers, during which time Gargan bonded with the Venom symbiote. As Venom, he served as Osborn’s “Spider-Man,” though his violent tendencies and lack of restraint made him a dangerous and unpredictable asset.
Following the fall of Osborn’s regime, Gargan lost the Venom symbiote and eventually returned to his identity as the Scorpion. His subsequent activities have included continued involvement in organized crime, repeated incarcerations, and further confrontations with Spider-Man and other heroes. Despite numerous defeats, Gargan remains a persistent and physically formidable threat.
In more recent years, Gargan has continued to operate both independently and as part of villain teams, often leveraging his reputation and brute strength. Though his original purpose was to defeat Spider-Man, his career has expanded into broader criminal endeavors, and he remains one of the more enduring adversaries within Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery.
Strength Level: Scorpion possesses superhuman strength enabling him to lift (press) approximately 10 tons under optimal conditions.
Known Superhuman Powers: The Scorpion possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and durability as a result of mutagenic treatments that altered his physiology. His enhanced musculature allows him to engage Spider-Man in direct combat, and his body is capable of withstanding significant physical punishment.
In addition to his natural enhancements, Scorpion utilizes a specialized armored suit equipped with a powerful mechanical tail. The tail can be used as both a bludgeoning weapon and a tool for grappling or maneuvering, and it is capable of striking with great force and precision. The suit also provides additional protection against physical damage.

The Scorpion’s suit enhances his already formidable physical capabilities, allowing him to deliver devastating blows and maintain prolonged combat engagements. His tail can extend, constrict, and deliver rapid strikes, making it one of his most dangerous assets in battle.
Limitations: The mutagenic process that granted Gargan his powers also caused significant psychological instability. His impaired judgment, aggressive tendencies, and bouts of insanity often hinder his effectiveness and make him unpredictable. Additionally, his reliance on his suit means that damage to it can reduce his combat efficiency.
The Scorpion employs a specialized armored suit featuring a prehensile mechanical tail capable of delivering powerful strikes and providing enhanced mobility.
