Charlie Burlingame grew up in an unstable household, as his father frequently moved from place to place and struggled to maintain steady employment. This pattern changed after his father attended a rally held by the Imperial Forces of America, an extremist organization he soon joined, bringing Charlie with him. While working with the group, Arnim Zola identified that Charlie possessed a latent genetic potential for superhuman abilities and arranged for those powers to be activated, transforming the boy into the superhuman known as Charcoal, the Burning Man.

As a member of the Bruiser Brigade, Charcoal initially clashed with the Thunderbolts as an adversary. However, he later defected and ultimately became a member of the Thunderbolts himself.

KNOWN SUPERHUMAN POWERS: Charlie Burlingame possesses the ability to transform into a form that appears to be composed entirely of charcoal. In this state, he can generate and control heat and alter his physical structure into a wide range of carbon-based forms, ranging from blazing, incendiary configurations to diamond-hard solidity.
