Changeling was a mutant shapeshifter who served as second-in-command of the subversive organization known as Factor Three. He later renounced his former allegiance and, at the request of Professor Charles Xavier, impersonated Xavier while the real Professor withdrew into seclusion to prepare for an anticipated invasion of Earth by the alien Z’nox. Changeling ultimately sacrificed his life while defeating Grotesk, the last survivor of an underground race intent on destroying the planet.

Subsequently, the voodoo sorcerer known as the Black Talon resurrected Changeling as a zombie and compelled him to serve as part of a team of reanimated mutant corpses called the X-Humed. After the Black Talon was defeated by She-Hulk, Changeling was released from this unnatural existence and returned to a state of true death.
