Historical Data

Warren Worthington III was born into immense wealth as the heir to the Worthington family fortune. His father, Warren Worthington Jr., was a powerful industrialist who expected his son to eventually inherit Worthington Industries. Warren’s life changed dramatically during adolescence when enormous feathered wings began growing from his back while he was attending a private boarding school.

At first Warren hid the mutation in fear. The wings rapidly developed to full size, forcing him to strap them tightly against his back beneath specially tailored clothing. Eventually he discovered he could fly. Though initially horrified by what he believed made him a “freak,” Warren gradually came to experience exhilaration and freedom while flying.

One night a fire broke out in his school dormitory. Warren chose to reveal his ability in secret in order to save the students trapped inside. To hide his identity he wore a long blond wig and a nightshirt so witnesses believed a literal angel had appeared to rescue them. The story spread quickly and Warren realized he could use his ability to help people.

Soon afterward he began operating publicly as a costumed hero called the Avenging Angel, fighting crime in New York. His activities drew the attention of Professor X, who recruited him to join the newly formed X-Men. Warren adopted the codename Angel and became one of the team’s five founding members alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, and Iceman.

As Angel, Warren served with the X-Men for several years battling threats such as Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Eventually the team expanded and Warren briefly left the group. Following the deaths of his parents, he inherited the Worthington fortune and attempted to use both his resources and powers for good. He publicly revealed himself as the Angel and helped form the superhero team the Champions in Los Angeles alongside heroes such as Black Widow, Ghost Rider, and Hercules. When the Champions eventually disbanded, Warren returned to business responsibilities while maintaining his long relationship with his girlfriend Candy Southern.

Warren later joined a reorganized version of the Defenders, operating from a mountain estate he owned with Candy Southern. Though the team experienced numerous adventures, tragedy struck when several members were seemingly killed in a conflict involving the cosmic entity known as the Dragon of the Moon. Soon afterward Warren reunited with the original X-Men to form X-Factor, a team that secretly aided mutants while publicly posing as mutant hunters.

Warren recruited an old school friend, Cameron Hodge, to manage X-Factor’s public relations. Unknown to him, Hodge secretly led an anti-mutant organization called the Right and manipulated events to increase anti-mutant fear.

During the Morlock Massacre—an attack by the Marauders on a community of underground mutants—Warren was gravely injured. The villain Harpoon shattered the bones of his wings, and infection soon spread through them. Surgeons were forced to amputate his wings entirely. Devastated by the loss of his identity as Angel, the collapse of his relationship with Candy Southern, and the controversies surrounding X-Factor, Warren fell into deep despair and apparently died when a private aircraft exploded.

In truth, he had been saved by the ancient mutant Apocalypse, who transformed him through genetic manipulation into one of his Four Horsemen. Warren’s wings regrew as razor-edged metallic appendages capable of launching poisonous projectiles, and his skin turned blue. Mentally conditioned to serve Apocalypse, he became the Horseman Death.

When he confronted his former teammates in battle, the emotional shock of believing Iceman had died broke Apocalypse’s conditioning. Warren rejected his master and fled. Eventually he reunited with his friends and adopted a new identity: Archangel.

As Archangel, Warren struggled constantly against the darker instincts instilled in him by Apocalypse’s transformation. He remained a key member of the X-Men and X-Factor, participating in many of the team’s most dangerous missions. During this period he formed a deep romantic relationship with Psylocke, whose own complicated transformations and psychic abilities allowed her to understand Warren’s internal conflict.

Over time Warren’s physiology continued to evolve. At one point his metallic wings shed and regrew into natural feathered wings again. Later they returned to a techno-organic form capable of shifting between feathered and metallic states. These changes were often tied to lingering influence from Apocalypse’s genetic modifications.

In later years Warren’s connection to Apocalypse deepened when he temporarily became the new Heir of Apocalypse, inheriting fragments of the ancient mutant’s power and responsibilities. This transformation again pushed him toward becoming the Horseman Death, though he ultimately resisted permanent corruption.

Throughout modern X-Men history Warren has continued serving as both Angel and Archangel depending on the state of his powers. His wings have evolved to grant him enhanced healing and the ability to transform between feathered and razor-sharp techno-organic forms. Despite repeated attempts by Apocalypse or others to control him, Warren has consistently chosen to remain a hero.

From privileged heir to founding X-Man, fallen Horseman of Death, and redeemed Archangel, Warren Worthington III’s life has been defined by transformation. Though his wings have changed many times—angelic feathers, metallic blades, and techno-organic constructs—his determination to rise above the darkness imposed on him has remained constant.

Powers and Abilities

Strength Level: The Angel possesses the normal human strength of a man of his age, height and build, who exercises in intensive regular exercise. His wings can create enough lift to enable him to carry aloft at least 200 pounds in addition to his own weight.

Known Superhuman Powers: Warren Worthington III is a mutant whose primary mutation manifests as a pair of large wings extending from his shoulder blades. These wings grant him natural powered flight and are supported by a modified physiology capable of sustaining aerial locomotion. Warren’s bones are partially hollow and his musculature, lungs, and cardiovascular system are highly adapted to support sustained flight.

His wingspan averages approximately fifteen feet and is composed of extremely durable feathers connected to powerful flight muscles across his upper torso and back. These muscles are strong enough to lift Warren and carry additional weight while airborne.

Flight
Angel is capable of true powered flight using his wings. Under normal conditions he can cruise comfortably at speeds around 70 mph and reach higher speeds during dives or when aided by air currents. His maneuverability is exceptional, allowing him to perform tight aerial turns, sudden climbs, and rapid directional changes.
Angel can remain airborne for extended periods thanks to enhanced lung capacity and efficient oxygen processing. His balance, coordination, and spatial awareness are all heightened to support high-speed aerial movement.

Enhanced Vision and Reflexes
Angel possesses extremely sharp eyesight adapted for long-distance aerial viewing. He can spot small objects or individuals from great heights while flying. His reflexes and reaction time are also enhanced, enabling him to navigate obstacles and evade attacks while airborne.

Archangel Transformation
After being genetically altered by Apocalypse, Warren’s body was transformed into the being known as Archangel. In this form his natural feathered wings were replaced with techno-organic metallic wings composed of razor-sharp blades.
These wings possess several additional abilities:

  • Projectile Feathers – Archangel can launch metallic feathers as high-velocity projectiles. These blades can penetrate steel and other durable materials.
  • Neurotoxin Secretion – The blades can be coated with powerful paralytic or lethal toxins engineered by Apocalypse.
  • Self-Regeneration – Expelled blades regrow rapidly from the wing structure.
  • Enhanced Durability – The metallic wings are far more resistant to damage than his natural wings.

Wing Evolution
Due to lingering alterations from Apocalypse’s experimentation, Warren’s physiology has evolved over time. In modern continuity he can shift between two wing states:

  • Feathered Angel Wings – His original organic wings enabling graceful flight.
  • Metallic Archangel Wings – Razor-edged techno-organic wings capable of firing toxin-laced blades.
This dual form allows Warren to operate either as Angel or Archangel depending on the circumstances.

Healing Properties
For a period of time Warren’s blood developed powerful healing properties as a side effect of Apocalypse’s genetic manipulation. His blood could accelerate healing in others and counteract certain toxins and diseases, though this ability has fluctuated across different storylines.

Combat Training
As a long-time member of the X-Men, Warren is a skilled aerial combatant. He frequently fights using high-speed diving attacks, grappling maneuvers, and precision projectile strikes with his wings. His aerial mobility makes him particularly effective in reconnaissance, rescue operations, and hit-and-run combat tactics.

Peak Human Conditioning
Even without his wings, Warren maintains excellent physical conditioning through years of training and combat experience. His endurance, agility, and hand-to-hand fighting skills are well above average.

Resources
As heir to the Worthington fortune, Warren possesses immense wealth and access to advanced technology through Worthington Industries. These resources have often supported X-Men operations and provided specialized equipment, aircraft, and facilities.

In both his Angel and Archangel identities, Warren Worthington III combines natural aerial superiority with the deadly capabilities granted by Apocalypse’s transformation, making him one of the most formidable airborne combatants among mutantkind.
