Jason Strongbow, a representative of the Navajo Nation, sought to prevent a mining company from excavating a mountain sacred to his people. He first pursued legal action by attempting to secure a court order, and when that effort failed, he organized and led a peaceful protest at the mining site. During the demonstration, a night watchman panicked and shot one of the protesters. Strongbow pursued the man into the mine, where he uncovered a far more dangerous conspiracy.
Inside, Strongbow discovered that the mining operation was secretly working for Klaw, the master of sound, who sought uranium to enhance his sonic powers. He also encountered his brother, Ward Strongbow, who rejected Jason’s commitment to preserving their ancestral lands. Their ideological conflict escalated into a violent confrontation. During the struggle, Klaw appeared and blasted both brothers with his sonic weapon. The intense sonic energy, combined with exposure to an unknown uranium isotope within the mine, mutagenically enhanced the brothers’ strength and senses. Klaw, having secured what he needed, fled with his hired miners to the Savage Land in Antarctica, where he intended to acquire vibranium.
Jason Strongbow emerged from the mine transformed and was hailed as a champion by his people. Interpreting the flight of a nearby eagle as a sign, he adopted the costumed identity of the American Eagle. Learning that Ward had accompanied the mining company to the Savage Land, Jason set out in pursuit. There, the American Eagle encountered Ka-Zar, the Thing, and Wyatt Wingfoot. Together, they confronted and defeated Klaw and his mercenaries. During the battle, Ward Strongbow, who had allied himself with Klaw, was killed by a stray bullet fired by one of the miners.
Following these events, the American Eagle returned to his people, embracing his role as their protector and champion.
STRENGTH LEVEL: The American Eagle possesses superhuman strength, enabling him to lift (press) approximately 15 tons under optimal conditions.
KNOWN SUPERHUMAN POWERS: The American Eagle possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, and endurance. He can run at a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour. He has several times the endurance of an average human being.
The American Eagle's sensory organs have also been fortified. Like his namesake, the eagle, he has keen eyesight and is able to see 800 feet what the average human being sees at 20 feet. His senses of smell, taste, and hearing are approximately three times as those of a human being.
WEAPONS: American Eagle carries a crossbow which fires specially designed bolts. He has a bolt to which a line of braided fiberglass is connected, enabling him to swing from overhead objects or to climb its length. He also has specially blunted bolts in order to stun an opponent at a distance.
