Historical Data

Much of Abyss’s life remains shrouded in mystery. He is the son of Mystique, though neither he nor Nightcrawler is aware that they are brothers. It is widely rumored that Abyss fought his way out of the genetic laboratories of Sinister. Rather than fleeing to freedom, however, he instead battled his way into the stronghold of Apocalypse, where he assassinated one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, a being known as Bastion. Impressed by the young mutant’s ferocity and determination, Apocalypse appointed him his youngest Horseman.

During the evacuation of Maine, Abyss was tasked with preventing the X-Men and the Sentinel forces from aiding humanity’s escape from North America. To draw Quicksilver into the open, Abyss kidnapped a young boy, fixating on the opportunity to impress Apocalypse by capturing Magneto’s son. This obsession proved to be his undoing. Abyss abandoned his primary mission, allowing the evacuation to proceed unchecked. Although he confronted Quicksilver, he was unable to defeat the X-Men leader. With Storm’s assistance, Quicksilver rescued the child and defeated Abyss.

Expand full history

Following this failure, Abyss was assigned to interrogate the enigmatic mutant known as Bishop. The X-Men mounted a daring rescue operation, and once again Abyss allowed his arrogance to interfere with his duty. This time, the consequences were far more severe. Underestimating the mutant Banshee, Abyss was caught off guard by the full force of Banshee’s sonic scream. Banshee flew directly into him and unleashed his power at maximum intensity, seemingly tearing Abyss apart.

Abyss has not been seen or heard from since, and he is widely presumed dead. However, given his unique abilities and lack of a truly physical form, it remains uncertain whether a being such as Abyss can ever truly die.

Powers and Abilities

Known Superhuman Powers: Abyss is a mutant whose body is actually a portal to another dimension. It is possible this may be the same dimension that Nightcrawler travels through when he teleports. Abyss is also able to stretch his body and capture things in his tendril-like appendages. absorb some of their strength, and then deposit them in his pocket dimension. It is unknown whether anything can survive in this pocket dimension it is possible that someday some of his victims could escape. Abyss also showed signs that he may have some sort of limited telepathy or empathy.
