The Wolfpack are a group of teen-aged youths
who reside in the South Bronx, in New York City.
The five youths who would one day comprise
the Wolfpack were selected for their extraordinary abilities
and aptitude by a retired former naval officer known only
as Mr. Mack. Mack trained the youths separately from adolescence
into their teen years to develop their individual skills
of hand-to-hand combat, strategy, stealth, speed, endurance,
and raw strength. Then, at a time he deemed appropriate,
Mack made the existence and abilities of the youths known
to each other.
The teens were told they would participate
in an age-old conflict based on an ancient legend. According
to Mack, the Wolfpack began over two thousand years ago
when a lost tribe of Israel wandered into China, and told
of a peculiar covenant that the "God of the Hebrews"
had made, promising the perpetual existence of ten just
and truly righteous men in the world at all times. However,
to preserve cosmic balance, there would also be nine mortal
men completely devoid of compassion, love or charity,
whose only purpose would be the undoing of the ten and
the proliferation of evil for its own sake. These men
were called "The Nine."
In order to keep The Nine and their extremely
successful methods in check, one of the ten renounced
his status and formed a renegade cult. This cult was hunted
by The Nine and forced into hiding in the hills, living
like wild wolves and honing their skills for conflict
with The Nine.
Mack first came into contact with one of
these Wolfpacks during World War II, while stationed on
a gunboat on the Yellow River in China. He met and was
trained by an elderly Chinese woman in ancient martial
arts whose perfection of form was superior to all contemporary
martial arts. After the war, Mack was tutored further
in these arts to battle the Nine while stationed in Japan.
The exact nature of this later training, and the identity
of his teachers remain unrevealed.
Macks newly formed Wolfpack began battling
the forces of the Nine in the Bronx shortly after their
inception, Mack later disappeared, abducted from his apartment
after a violent struggle, and the Pack was forced to act
on their own to save teammate Samuel "Slippery Sam"
Weltshmerz from wrongful arrest and assassination at the
hands of The Nine. Shortly thereafter, the original five
members of the Wolfpack swore a blood oath to be a new
Wolfpack, whose territory would be the hills of the South
Bronx. Mack witnessed this bonding, apparently displaying
a superhuman imperviousness to bullets. The final fate
of Mr. Mack remains unrevealed.
In battling a powerful member of The Nine
known as Apollo, Wolfpack member Raphael Vega discovered
that Apollo was his true father. A showdown following
this discovery forced Vega to take his father's life in
order to protect a teammate. This act brought Vega an
inheritance from Apollo of holdings in Bedlam Co., a front
company of The Nine, making Vega an official member of
The Nine. This inheritance temporarily estranged Vega
from the group, lessening the Wolfpack's presence on the
streets. During this period, an insanely sociopathic youth
known as Christian pressed several crack-addicted youths
into a new gang, the Wizards, with the purpose of making
the South Bronx their own. Vega rejoined the Wolfpack
and shortly thereafter helped defeat Christian and the
Wizards, but only after Christian succeeded in slaying
The surviving pack members continue to protect
and patrol the Bronx, and battle the forces of The Nine.
